Dear colleagues,

I would like to inform you about 5th International Conference on Materials Design and Applications 2024, which will take place in Porto, Portugal, 4-5 July 2024 (www.fe.up.pt/mda2024). The conference venue is the campus of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), which offers excellent facilities for high quality scientific interactions. FEUP is located in the town of Porto in the Northern region of Portugal. Porto is a beautiful and lively city, steeped in history and rich in great experiences. With its magnificent location by the Atlantic coast, Porto is the city of the world famous Port Wine and the River Douro.

This conference is held every two years in Porto and chaired by Prof Lucas F. M. da Silva. The focus is on fundamental research and application areas in the field of the design and application of engineering materials, predominantly within the context of mechanical engineering applications such as automobile, railway, marine, aerospace, biomedical, pressure vessel technology, turbine technology, etc. This includes a wide range of materials engineering and technology, including metals, e.g., lightweight metallic materials, polymers, composites, and ceramics. Advanced applications would include manufacturing in the new or newer materials, testing methods, multi-scale experimental and computational aspects (e.g. micro- and nano-scale techniques).

The scientific committee of MDA 2024 includes Alberto Barroso (University of Seville, Spain), Alejandro Ureña (University of Rey Juan Carlos, Spain), Alessandro Pirondi (Università degli Studi di Parma, Italy), Alireza Akhavan-Safar (INEGI, Portugal), Alvaro Rodríguez-Prieto (UNED, Spain), Andreas Brunner (Retired Scientist, Zurich, Switzerland), António Ferreira (University of Porto, Portugal), António Torres Marques (University of Porto, Portugal), Bohumil Kasal (Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research, Germany), Chiaki Sato (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan), Dan Constantinescu (University Politechnica of Bucharest, Romania), Davide Castagnetti (Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy), Fátima Vaz (University of Lisbon, Portugal), Filipe Samuel Silva (University of Minho, Portugal), Francesco Tornabene (University of Salento, Italy), Frédéric Jacquemin (University of Nantes, France), Jean-François Ferrero (Université Toulouse III, France), Jean-François Chatelain (École de Technologie Supérieure, Canada), Jorge Lino Alves (University of Porto, Portugal), Łukasz Sadowski (Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Poland), Maciej Kupczyk (Poznan University of Technology, Poland), Majid Ayatollahi (Iran University of Science and Technology, Iran), Manuel Vieira (University of Porto, Portugal), Marion Merklein (Friedrich-Alexander University, Germany), Nicolas Carrere (ENSTA, France), Paulo Martins (University of Lisbon, Portugal), Renato Hunter (University of la Frontera, Chile), Ricardo Carbas (INEGI, Portugal), Robert Adams (University of Oxford, UK), Salah Mezlini (École Nationale d’Ingénieurs de Monastir, Tunisia), Sean Leen (NUI Galway, Ireland), Silvio de Barros (CEFET/RJ, Brazil) and Yosi Bar-Cohen (JPL/Caltech, USA).

Authors who wish to make a presentation (oral or poster) are requested to submit a short abstract (one single A4 page possibly with a diagram and references) in English, by 8 March 2024. The abstracts should be sent electronically to lucas@fe.up.pt. The abstract template can be downloaded from the conference web site (www.fe.up.pt/mda2024).

Conference proceedings (CD-ROM) with the accepted abstracts will be available at the registration. The CD-ROM will have an ISBN number.
Full papers will be published in special issues of:

The full papers (not compulsory) should be sent to the e-mail lucas@fe.up.pt before the 4th of July 2024. The text should be in single column format and double line spacing.
