Dear colleague,

I would like to inform you about the 1st International Conference on Bio-joining which will take place in Porto, Portugal, 5-6 December 2024 (Link). The conference venue is the campus of Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), which offers excellent facilities for high quality scientific interactions. FEUP is located in the town of Porto in the Northern region of Portugal. Porto is a beautiful and lively city, steeped in history and rich in great experiences. With its magnificent location by the Atlantic coast, Porto is the city of the world famous Port Wine and the River Douro. The conference will operate in a mixed format, where presentations can be held physically but also remotely, using a video-conferencing system.

This conference is held every 2 years and is chaired by Lucas F. M. da Silva and co-chaired by Luís Lamas, Teresa Pinho and Luísa Carvalho. The focus is on joining techniques (adhesives, mechanical joints and welding) applied to biological environments, in medical, dentistry and veterinary applications. Submissions are welcomed on the following topics: natural adhesives, biological adhesives, biomimetic adhesives, fibrillar adhesives, bioadhesion, bioinspired interfaces and surfaces, joining of natural materials, adhesion and adhesives in dentistry, adhesion and adhesives in medicine, adhesion and adhesives in veterinary, biologically inspired joints, mechanical joints in biological applications and welding in biological applications.

The scientific committee includes Antonio Pizzi (University of Lorraine, France), Davide Ruffoni (University of Liège, Belgium), Francisca Arán-Ais (INESCOP Innovation and Technology Centre, Spain), Haytam Kasem (Azrieli College of Engineering Jerusalem, Israel), Henrik Birkedal (Aarhus University, Denmark), Jesús Octavio (Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Spain), João Ramos (University of Coimbra, Portugal), José Manuel Mendes (IUCS - CESPU, Portugal), Juan Carlos del Real (Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Spain), Lígia Rocha (IUCS - CESPU, Portugal), Maria João Calheiros-Lobo (IUCS - CESPU, Portugal), Marleen Kamperman (University of Groningen, Netherlands), Nasim Annabi (University of California, USA), Pablo Sanz-Ruíz (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Gregorio Marañón, Spain), Roberto Santoprete (L'Oréal, France), Rui Falacho (University of Coimbra, Portugal), Stanislav Gorb (Kiel University, Germany) and Tetsuo Yamaguchi (University of Tokyo, Japan).

Authors who wish to make a presentation (oral or poster) are requested to submit a short abstract (one single A4 page possibly with a diagram and references) in English, by 28 June 2024. The abstracts should be sent electronically to lucas@fe.up.pt. The abstract template can be downloaded from the conference web site (Link).

Conference proceedings with the accepted abstracts will be available at the registration.
The full papers will be published in special issues of The Journal of Adhesion (Taylor & Francis), Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications (Sage), Scientific Letters (IUCS-CESPU Publishing) and in the book series Proceedings in Engineering Mechanics - Research, Technology and Education (Springer), provided they meet the journals standard. The full papers (not compulsory) should be sent to the e-mail lucas@fe.up.pt before the 5th of December 2024. The text should be in single column format and double line spacing.

Important dates:
